Professor Irene Soto Marín is an ancient historian of Roman and Late Roman Egypt whose research illuminates the life of the 99%—the workers, villagers, urban workers and producers who formed the economic fabric of the ancient world. Using numismatic, papyrological, and archaeological evidence, she reconstructs the systems and practices that defined everyday economic experience across the Roman Mediterranean.

She is co-editor of *Ancient Taxation: The Mechanics of Extraction in Comparative Perspective* (NYU Press, 2021) and has published extensively on topics in papyrology, archaeology, and numismatics. Her current monograph, *The Nile Flows with Gold: Money and the Global Economy of Roman Egypt* (forthcoming in 2027 with Princeton University Press), examines Egypt’s economic integration within the Roman Mediterranean through a numismatic lens. She has also published articles on economic growth, the Egyptian countryside, and its environmental context, in addition to numismatic articles on the site of Karanis. She is also currently preparing the publication of three major coin hoards from Egypt, including two from the site of Ayn el-Sabil, in the Dakhleh Oasis of Egypt.

Professor Soto Marín has undertaken extensive fieldwork in Egypt, working at the site of Amheida in the Dakhleh Oasis from 2008 to 2023. She holds a BA in Anthropology and Ancient Studies from Barnard College, Columbia University (2010), and an MPhil (2014) and PhD (2018) from the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University. Before joining Harvard, she served as Wissenschaftliche Assistentin in the Department of Ancient History at the University of Basel (2017–2020) and as Assistant Professor of Classical Studies and Assistant Curator of Numismatics at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan (2020–2022).

From 2023 to 2029, she is serving as Director at Large for the American Society of Papyrologists.
